Today we remember Marcy Borders, a Legal Assistant who worked at the Bank of America located at the World Trade Center in NYC. She survived 9/11 but died on this date Aug. 24th back in 2015.
On 9/11, Marcy became “The Dust Lady” when Stan Honda, a photographer for Agence France Presse, captured an image of Borders, completely covered in dust from the collapse of the Twin Towers.
Borders was diagnosed with stomach cancer in August 2014. The illness saddled her with incredible suffering and crippling debt of over $190,000. Owing this, she had not yet received surgery and she still needed additional chemotherapy.
The image of Marcy covered in toxic dust is now iconic and serves to remind us of the troubling realities being experienced by hundreds (some estimate eventually thousands) of people getting sick in the aftermath of that day that we will #NeverForget
To place Marcy’s story in greater context, this guide invites you to a virtual or in-person visit in the Financial District.
