Cornerstone for a New Symbol of Freedom

On this day, back in 2004, the cornerstone for the “Freedom Tower” (One World Trade Center) was laid on the former World Trade Center site in Lower Manhattan.

Groundbreaking For Freedom Tower At Ground Zero

The inscription on the granite block reads:
“TO HONOR AND REMEMBER THOSE WHO LOST THEIR LIVES ON SEPTEMBER 11, 2001, AND AS A TRIBUTE TO THE ENDURING SPIRIT OF FREEDOM. – JULY FOURTH 2004.”

Unfortunately construction was delayed until 2006 due to disputes over money, security, and design. The last major issues were resolved on April 26, 2006, when a deal was made between developer Larry Silverstein and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

The structure was officially completed in July 2013.
